Valentines Day Its Origin

When we think of Valentine’s Day, we often think of red roses, chocolates in heart- shaped boxes, and Cupid flying around shooting arrows at dreamy-eyed lovers. But there are very few who know how the Day originated.

Who was St. Valentine and why is this day named after him?

Credit for the link between Valentine’s Day and lovers goes to Geoffrey Chaucer.  Chaucer is thus known as the architect of Saint Valentine’s day. The earliest description of the tradition occurs in his “Parliament of Fouls” which was composed around 1380 and is considered as the finest occasional poem in the English language. Since then St. Valentine’s Day has been associated with love.
While in prison, for refusing to give up Christianity, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter who visited him during his confinement. Before being led out to his execution, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, signing it ‘From your Valentine,’ an expression that is still in use. Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.
